Starting a power struggle is a dead end

Watch this video [0:46] to learn an early “power struggle” mistake I made.

I challenged them. I said to those nine boys, “If you guys don’t get this assignment done, I am taking your break away.” As soon it was break time, I had nine of the most challenged kids in the system. They heard what from me? A power struggle, and they were going to win. So I had set myself up right in the beginning. It wasn’t something I should have even put out there because they didn’t hear anything for the next 20 minutes. All they did was sit there and look at that clock, wait for that break, and decide, “I’m going to accept this challenge on this lady.” So I learned not to do that.
