Should we pay them to behave?

If a student has the cognitive ability to change his behavior, then he can manipulate a reward system, and it will stop working.

Therefore whenever I see a reward system not working, I think to myself, “This is a kid I can teach skills to.”

This is also the kid who eventually will want you to up the reward. If you give two dollars for an A, you’d better have a Porsche in the garage by the time he gets to college.
