Working with Nonverbal Children with Autism and Those with More Intense Needs

Children with more severe impairments require a focus that concentrates on early learning skills. Basic skills such as visual tracking, auditory tracking, and executing basic motor responses such as grasping and releasing may be deficient or delayed with this population of children and require direct instruction. This workshop focuses on identification and intervention for these basic skills. It will address:

  • Assessment of skills and establishing a starting point for instruction;
  • Strategies for teaching children to respond to environmental stimuli (e.g., auditory and visual tracking);
  • Strategies for teaching pre-linguistic communication skills; and
  • Teaching early play skills.
