Trees (grades 3 – 8)
Available as a Workshop and/or Consulting by Dick Bothmer
There are many ways to divide trees into two categories. Hardwoods and softwoods are one good way. Hardwoods are broad-leafed, flowering trees that lose their leaves in the fall. Softwoods are the conifers, cone bearing trees whose leaves are needles. By far the greater volume of trees harvested are the softwoods. They are tall and straight grained. They make good lumber for building. The wood is also used for wood pulp for making paper. They grow faster and are easier to work with, so they are cheaper to buy. Participants will identify hardwood and softwood trees, make leaf sketches, and take measurements that will allow them to determine the value of individual specimens on the open market.
