Teachers Working Together to Create an Integrated Science Unit

Through this workshop, elementary and middle school teachers of science will:

  • Learn about the value of collaboration to facilitate the incorporation of Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) in unit development;
  • Experience approaches to using Common Planning Time that allow teachers to plan and work efficiently and collaboratively;
  • View elementary and middle school examples of science units that include integration with other subject areas;
  • Evaluate the design of an existing unit for: GLE concepts and skills, level of integration, overall theme, level of student engagement;
  • Identify an Essential Question for a unit that conveys “the big picture”;
  • Work in grade level teams to create an integrated science unit on a given topic; and
  • Discuss how this approach can be incorporated back in school.
