Secondary School Personalization: Creating an Advisory Program

The purpose of an Advisory Program is to provide each student the opportunity to be known well by one adult. This training guides school teams through the planning process of designing an effective advisory program that bases itself on the needs of their student body.
Goals: Middle school and high school administrators, guidance counselors, teachers, and Advisory Program Coordinators will:
- Create a vision for advisory groups that bases itself on theory, research, and field expertise;
- Plan for the Five Key Dimensions that are crucial to a successful Advisory Program;
- Develop a specific tailored purpose for the advisory program that aligns with student needs;
- Explore the school procedures and structures that can support or diminish the success of advisory groups;
- Learn about advisory content and a wide range of activities that can be used for advisories;
- Investigate assessment mechanisms; and
- Identify how to create long-term sustainability of advisory groups.
