Making Peace: More Than Conflict Resolution In Classrooms & Schools
Available as a Workshop and/or Consulting by Nancy S. Buck, Ph.D.
The potential for violence and chaos is increasing in our schools. Children bullying, threatening violence and shooting each other is of the gravest of concerns. Now we witness police handcuffing out-of-control elementary school students. It truly seems the behavior problems in our schools are getting worse.
Rather than blame these increasingly out-of-control events on children, it is perhaps time to acknowledge that the usual discipline strategies are failing and will continue to fail. These strategies are usually based on the assumption that through external manipulation adults can make children behave appropriately. For our most challenging children this has never and will never work. Calling in the police to handcuff 5 and 7-year olds clearly highlights a need for an innovative, more effective and humane approach.
This presentation will teach participants to understand human behavior and relationships differently. More than teaching children conflict resolution this presentation focuses on the bigger picture: making peace. A peaceful school emerges from a harmonious environment. When adults and children understand each other, appreciate and tolerate their differences, as well as hold their relationships precious, peace is the by-product. This presentation will teach participants how to develop and maintain such an environment, in the classroom, in the school, and in the home.
