Introduction to Autism Spectrum (3 years – middle school)

Working with a child with autism requires a clear understanding of both the nature of the disorder as well as exactly how adults can be effective or can very easily shoot themselves in the foot! Putting it mildly, if you are working with a child with autism it is not the time to wing it! These children need informed, skilled, patient, and compassionate adults around them. This workshop will focus on:
- The prevalence, demographics, and etiology of autism spectrum disorder;
- How is autism diagnosed? What are the criteria? What are the assessments?
- What explains autism? (We don’t know for sure, but there are theories.) And
- How can autism be treated? Overview of treatment strategies.
