Getting Started: Establishing a Differentiated Classroom
Available as a Workshop and/or Consulting by Caroline Cohen, Ph.D.
Many teachers embrace the concept of differentiation and agree it is an essential component in meeting the needs of all students in the heterogeneous classroom. However, the challenges of differentiating curriculum and instruction effectively can often seem overwhelming for new and veteran teachers alike. Take the chaos out of differentiation with this training, which will present organizational strategies for classroom teachers in grades K-12.
Participants will explore ways to establish a classroom atmosphere of differentiation, obtain useful resources for themselves and their students, and develop appropriate activities which will meet the various needs of diverse learners, while remaining accountable for academic standards and student performance.
Strategies will be presented for managing time, space, and materials, as well as for grouping, motivation, and student self-management. Myths and misconceptions about differentiation will be discussed. Techniques will be suggested for communicating about differentiation to students, parents, colleagues, and administrators. Useful literature and resources will be presented.
Target Audience: classroom teachers (K-12), gifted/talented teachers, special education teachers, curriculum and instruction coordinators, administrators
Option A: One or two day workshop, or after school workshop or series.
Option B: Extended series of after-school workshops paired with during-school observations, consulting and coaching, focused on deepening use of differentiation as a tool for increasing student outcomes for all.
