Managing & Changing Classroom Behavior Using Dr. Mike Mezzocchi’s “Scripting” Techniques
Available as a Workshop and/or Consulting by Joyce Butler, Ed.D.
Participants will learn how:
- to reduce problem behavior in the classroom by responding to it with words that guide, encourage, teach, and set limits;
- to help a student alter the thinking that leads to problematic actions; and
- to organize their own thinking around problem behaviors so that they are better prepared, more consistent, and more effective.
This workshop is an introduction to how to use the late Dr. Mike Mezzocchi’s scripts for addressing targeted behaviors in the classroom. Dr. Butler was a consulting associate of Dr. Mezzocchi’s, who was legendary for his successful behavior management techniques.
Dr. Mezzocchi’s behavior management script technique for teachers is fundamentally a template for responding to off-task and difficult behaviors with a pre-meditated sequence of teacher responses that help the teacher keep his/her affect low-key, while supplying prompts, limits, and guides to students. This method has a proven track record in schools around New England as one that helps most students most of the time to get back and stay on task. Developed by Dr. Mezzocchi, it is based on using cognitive theory as a method of not just managing, but changing behavior.
Target Audience: all educators
