Literature Circles

Literature circles are one way for students to join with like-thinking peers of mixed grades (or even within the same grade) to explore higher level thinking around the concepts presented in literature. For example, a group of first and second graders may read Mr. Popper’s Penguins and engage in research on penguins and/or the Antarctic. Or, they might read Ida B and learn about how to use rich language in their own writing pieces. The students who participate in a Literature Circle are students who are able to work independently, able to discuss abstract thoughts among their peer group, and enthusiastic about taking on additional academic challenges. This type of enrichment opportunity provides those students who require an additional learning challenge the chance to expand their learning horizons.

Target Audience: elementary teachers and administrators
