Issues and Practices in Special Education

This course is designed to challenge our thinking.  We will examine current practical, ethical and legal issues facing special education today through the reading of the text, exploration of current research, discussion, and reflective opportunities. The course will address the following topics: categorization and classification, assessment, instruction and inclusionary practices, early intervention, school reform, the home-school partnership, student performance, and the transition process.  Participants will:

  • Enhance their current knowledge framework regarding the issues that face students, parents, and staff in the field of special education;
  • Build a repertoire of the knowledge/facts/opinions that can be found in the current research on the topics of study; and
  • Assess their belief system with regard to the expectation that all students can learn at high standards.
