How to Help Parents

For the teacher or counselor who wants to make the most of opportunities to help parents build their skills, this workshop will focus on:

  • Helping the parent to strengthen their relationship with their child;
  • Approaching discipline at home using a problem-solution format; and
  • Organizing the home for parent/child success:
    • Homework space and time;
    • Expectations (Making the bed? Not slamming doors?);
    • Place to put notes to each other;
    • Chore checklist on refrigerator (child marks what is completed so that the parent is not constantly walking around behind them making sure things are done–a strain on any relationship!);
    • Teaching organizational skills (e.g., how and when to pack school bag); and
    • Setting up routines so school mornings aren’t disorganized and stressful.

Target Audience: elementary teachers and counselors
