How to Help Parents
Available as a Workshop and/or Consulting by Joyce Butler, Ed.D.
For the teacher or counselor who wants to make the most of opportunities to help parents build their skills, this workshop will focus on:
- Helping the parent to strengthen their relationship with their child;
- Approaching discipline at home using a problem-solution format; and
- Organizing the home for parent/child success:
- Homework space and time;
- Expectations (Making the bed? Not slamming doors?);
- Place to put notes to each other;
- Chore checklist on refrigerator (child marks what is completed so that the parent is not constantly walking around behind them making sure things are done–a strain on any relationship!);
- Teaching organizational skills (e.g., how and when to pack school bag); and
- Setting up routines so school mornings aren’t disorganized and stressful.
Target Audience: elementary teachers and counselors
