Bio Mapping (grades 3 – 8)

Biological mapping is the process of locating a particular specimen in a defined area, and then proceeding to collect information about its likely habitat, density, needs, problems, etc. This is a totally valid scientific method that Mr. Bothmer has used variations of to determine lobster kill numbers after an oil spill, to measure kelp biomass at twenty foot depths in the Gulf of Maine, and to count golden eagle populations in northern Manitoba. A normal school property usually provides sufficient variety to work well. The actual biological mapping activity can be made as simple or complex as the group can handle. This is a “pull on your boots, button up your coat, grab your pencil, and head outside” activity.
